Hello Wheatland Elementary Families,
As the first day of school approaches, we are beginning to finalize our new routines and protocols in light of COVID-19. Our goal, as always, is to keep our students and staff safe while also providing excellent education. Below you will find some key pieces of information about the first few days of school.
Staggered Entry: In order to ease our students back into school and give us the opportunity to teach new routines, we will have approximately half of our students at a time for the first six days.
Staggered Entry Schedule:
Bell Times: Our bell times will remain the same.
Dropping Students Off: If you are walking your children to school or dropping them off, please do so starting at 8:15 am and take them directly to their assigned door. Please see the image at the end of this letter that shows door assignments. Parents can say goodbye to their students at their assigned doors. Students will be coming directly into the building upon their arrival at 8:15am for the Staggered Entry Days. Students will not be playing on playground equipment or on the field before the morning bell.
Picking Students Up: At the end of the day, we will be dismissing students who are walking home or who are being picked up at 2:55pm. This will help to decrease congestion at all entrances/exits. If you are picking up your child, please do so at their assigned door (or a designated meeting space of your choice). Students will not be dismissed through the office/main entrance. We are encouraging all students who are walking or being picked up by parents to leave school property as soon as possible to reduce crowding on the playground, field and sidewalks.
Students Riding the Bus: Bus students will arrive at school and enter the school immediately through their assigned door. At the end of the day, bus students will be released in a staggered manner. Once we have more information from the GHSD Transportation Department, specific release times will be determined and shared with our families.
Parking for Pick Up and Drop Off: Parking is available in the parent parking lot as well as along Strathford Blvd. Please do not park in the Bus Loop or in the Staff Parking Lot.
Students who Arrive Late: On occasion, students arrive at school late. Parents will need to stay with their child and bring them to the main office door to sign them in. This process will likely take longer than in past years, as we need to maintain social distancing. Parents and their children are required to stand outside the front door and form a socially distanced line. Office Staff will then indicate when a parent and child can enter the school and come into the office. Parents will need to complete the AHS Questionnaire prior to entering, which can be found on the front door of the school. Once in the school, parents will need to use hand sanitizer and fill out the “student sign in/out” logbook.
Recesses & Lunch: Recesses and lunches will be staggered so that a smaller number of students will be out at any one time. Each group of students will have a designated area for play. Playgrounds and school fields will be open for play for students during their designated recess and lunch blocks. Students are being asked to bring a healthy snack and lunch that they can eat independently, without adult assistance. There will be no microwaves for students or staff to use, so all food needs to come ready to eat.
Parents Entering the School: We have an obligation to reduce the number of people in our building, yet we understand there may be the odd time when a parent may need to come into the school. Parents and other visitors may only enter through the front entrance/main office door. Prior to entering, parents must complete the AHS Questionnaire which can be found on the front door of the school. Once in the school, please use the hand sanitizer provided and sign the log book at the office. Parents will not be allowed in classrooms, hallways or in locker areas without direct permission from the Administration. It is preferred that you call the office or email the Administration and book an appointment.
Hand Cleanliness and PPE for Students: Students will use hand sanitizer before entering and exiting the school and each time students enter and exit the classroom and other learning spaces. Proper handwashing will be taught and encouraged when students are using the washrooms, etc.
1. Must have at least 2 layers of fabric
2. Must fit snugly against the face.
School Supply Fee: All families are required to pay a $35 per student School Supply Fee. Please go to School Cash Online (https://goldenhills.schoolcashonline.com/) to pay this fee ASAP. Invoices will be going home with students in the first couple of weeks of school if families do not pay their School Supply Fee by the beginning of the school year. In addition to the $35 School Supply Fee, we ask that students bring indoor shoes, a backpack and lunch box, a dishwasher safe water bottle, headphones, and a box of medium ziplock bags.
Although there are changes to our routines, we are creating a learning environment where students feel safe and cared for. We are excited to see our students and want to assure all of our Wheatland families that we will be doing everything we can to make the transition back to school one that is filled with excitement as well as safety. We will continue to keep you informed of our new routines and of any changes. Every family should have received an email from their student’s teacher at the end of June 2020. If you have not received an email from your child’s teacher, please let the school office know by calling (403) 934-3318.
We look forward to September 1st and 2nd when we get to connect with all of our students! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the school (403-934-3318) or your child’s new teacher via email.
