Wheatland EMS Visits Wheatland Elementary School: Some time ago we did an experiment to demonstrate how many children we could fit behind a mini-van keeping them invisible to the driver if they only used their mirrors prior to backing up. We were able to place 76 children in this blind spot and the driver could not see a single child. The larger the vehicle, the larger the blind spot. With this information in hand we headed to Wheatland Elementary School to see how many students we could fit into this blind spot behind our ambulance. In the photos there are 246 students behind the ambulance and not a single child is visible in the driver's mirror. Unfortunately we ran out of students before we filled this blind spot. Driveway injuries are an under recognized often severe form of auto-pedestrian accidents and approximately 70% of children are backed over by a family member.. “The best safety advice for blind spots: Before backing up, walk around your vehicle both front and back”.
