Wheatland Montessori is an educational approach blending the Montessori Method and public education. Wheatland Elementary offers a Montessori educational program from pre-school to gade 3.
Montessori was pioneered by Dr. Maria Montessori, with the first Montessori school opening in 1907. The Wheatland Montessori program began at Wheatland Elementary in September of 2005, with Mrs. Pinel being one of the original teachers. Over the past 12 years it has grown to include two classes of Pre-K (ages 3 and 4), Kindergarten-Grade 1 and Grade 2-3.
Montessori is comprised of many features which combine to create an alternative approach to education:
“Homey” classroom environment, non-distracting, reflecting simplicity and order
Community atmosphere as students sit at tables and share school supplies, promoting cooperative learning
Specialized Montessori materials that foster hands-on learning
Prepared environment that facilitates individualized instruction for Language Arts and Math
Work Cycle that teaches time management and self-initiative through guidance and structure
Philosophy that incorporates multi-age classrooms and peer teaching
Teachers have earned both a Bachelor of Education degree, as well as training and certification in the Montessori Method
