From October 23-30, the students and staff of our school once again held a Food Bank Drive benefiting the Wheatland Food Bank and the Strathmore & District Christmas Hamper Society. As in 2015 & 2016, this event was held in October instead of December and was done in partnership with Strathmore Ford and the WE Scare Hunger program which is a venture of WE Schools. This endeavour ties in beautifully with our Leader in Me initiative at Wheatland Elementary, particularly those aspects of the program emphasizing good citizenship, thinking win-win, synergizing, and finding meaningful ways to help others. The Grade 6 Student Leadership Council did all of the organizing for this event, including the tallying, sorting and packaging of all donated items. There was a friendly competition between homeroom classes to encourage maximum participation.
We are excited to share that as of November 1st, our total number of items had reached 2813, the highest number collected in the past 6 years at our school. Strathmore Ford picked up all of the food items this afternoon to drop off at the Wheatland Food Bank, and later this month, all of the hygiene and wish list items collected will be donated to the Strathmore & District Christmas Hamper Society. We are very grateful to Strathmore Ford for the generous donation of $1000.00 that they made to our school’s hot lunch and milk programs, as this money will go directly towards providing children at our own school with much needed lunches. We are so appreciative of the opportunity to partner with such a great local business to support those less fortunate in our community! Thank you to everyone who supported our WE Scare Hunger Food Bank Drive!!
